Autumn Equinox or Mabon

Updated: Sep 21

Having wanted to dive in a bit more this year to celebrating the seasonal transitions more so than stressing myself out with spending far too much on candy and gifts during national holidays, I thought it would be fitting to #celebrate our first year anniversary of Eden's opening on the Autumn Equinox. I've written before about how nature helped me connect with myself, helped me become more grounded and heal some rather significant trauma. I cherish the reminder that we all need to turn inwards at times, rather regular times, and can trust that once again we will bloom. The Autumn Equinox, having the same amount of day and night, reminds me of the need to create balance in my life.

Having had a busy practice previously, pouring my heart into it and my profession in every way, ultimately martyring myself completely, this first year in practice has been healing for me too. We have worked hard to create a balance that honors our needs, and really encouraged clients to identify their own boundaries, rights, and desires as part of their own healing process.

As we wind down this first year of practice we hope each of you will join us in celebrating our harvest. We want to honor the healing we've invested in and celebrate our upcoming second harvest. We also want to thank each of you for supporting us as we stepped into this new adventure. We are exceedingly grateful.

Named after the Welsh god, Mabon, son of the earth goddess, Modron, the Autumn Equinox is the time of equal light of day and equal dark of night. From here forward, the year begins to wane and from this moment the nights become longer than the days. Those who celebrate Mabon will focus on the second harvest, when the sweet fruit harvest of apples, pears, and berries are gathered. It is also the time for us to focus on further growth in the practice, having spent the first year really focusing on creating a firm foundation and solidifying our vision and intentions. We have found balance; now we seek growth.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Autumn Equinox is celebrated on September 21st and 22nd with acorns, pinecones, corn, wheat stalks, apples, root vegetables, and pomegranates. Asters, mums, thistle, oak leaves, sage, and sweet alyssum also join the celebration, as well as candles or anything red, orange and brown. Owls, blackbirds, dogs, and wolves, the scents of myrrh and sage, even brooms are great additions to the party, or altar. Our first #anniversary celebration will be Thursday, September 22nd at 6pm in our Carmel office. A very generous client of ours is offering a bountiful of autumn-based refreshments: wild rice soup, apple cake, a harvest cheese board, cider, and even rosemary caramel corn!

I will be teaching a short yoga class, focusing on balancing our breath, our physical beings, and our minds in honor of the Autumn Equinox. My hope is I can sweet talk a few drummers into joining me in a Therapeutic Drum Circle, an incredible tool for health and wellness, a breath of fresh air. And what a great way to create community and celebrate connection and healing and happiness.
